Coach Charyl Teal
Owner/Operator The Aquatic Academy
An avid swimmer since the age of 3, Charyl Teal first stepped into the role of swimming professional by the time she was 16, earning her first round of certifications: Lifeguard, Water Safety Instructor, First Aid, CPR and Pool & Beach Management. Over the next ten years, she utilized her certifications while working for the City of Columbus Ohio, the Easter Seals of Ohio, Ohio State University and the YWCA of Columbus, during which time she coached upwards of a thousand students in swimming and diving, from beginner to competitor and from young to old.
Charyl went on to receive her Bachelors of Science in Computer Engineering Technology and eventually found herself working as a tech professional at both NASA and Apple Computer. During this time, she and husband Mark, decided to start a family. She named her children Leia and Alex, and knew there was no-one better to teach them how to swim than herself. She wanted to share with her family the joys of swimming, and this desire inevitably grew into the desire to spread these joys to her neighbors. Soon enough, she found herself fully engaged in teaching other families in the neighborhood.
What started as casual lessons in the backyard grew into the business it is today – The Aquatic Academy. And today, even as the business continues to grow, Charyl still holds those central ideals at heart which motivated her to share her knowledge and expertise with those around her: that learning to swim is an essential life skill, and that no child is ever really safe around the backyard pool unless they have the knowledge and skills to swim independently.
In addition to her capacity as Owner/Operator and Lead Coach at the Aquatic Academy, Coach Charyl also works part time as an Assistant Coach for Pearland Aquatics (PEAK) Swim team, where she teaches athletic and competitive swimming.
